Stanley J. Marks is the senior member of Begam, Lewis & Marks. He practices in all areas of personal injury litigation, though representing the victims of crimes has been his specialty in his more than 35 years of practicing law. Mr. Marks is certified by the Arizona State Bar as a Specialist in Injury and Wrongful Death Litigation.
Mr. Marks is very active in the community, investing his time, energy, and expertise into improving the lives of people in Arizona and across the country. He was a founder of the Arizona chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.) and served as its chair for several years. He was also the founding member of the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest and served as its president.
Mr. Marks is a past president of the Arizona Trial Lawyer’s Association, and is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Burns and Trauma. He also sits on the national board of the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, an organization that fights for the rights of all Americans. Mr. Marks regularly presides as a Pro Tem Judge in Maricopa County and serves as a Magistrate in Paradise Valley. Most recently, he has been selected to be included in the Best Lawyer’s Consumer Guide.
Steven M. Friedman is a member in our law firm, and is actively engaged in the personal injury trial practice throughout the State of Arizona. He has attained significant plaintiffs’ verdicts in interstate trucking litigation, medical malpractice, premises liability, automobile, and product liability cases. Mr. Friedman is admitted to practice law in Missouri and Arizona, and was admitted to the District Court for the District of Arizona and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1966, and the United States Supreme Court in 1972. He is also certified as a Specialist in Injury and Wrongful Death Litigation by the State Bar of Arizona.
Steven M. Friedman attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, and earned an A.B. degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1962. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Washington University College of Law in 1965 and went on to attend New York University Graduate School of Law.
Mr. Friedman has lectured extensively in the areas of trial practice and ethics for the American Association for Justice, the State Bar of Arizona, and the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association. He was a member of the Arizona State Bar Committee on Rules of Professional Conduct for 20 years, and served as a State Supreme Court Hearing Officer in disciplinary matters for more than two decades. Mr. Friedman has also spent many years as a Judge Pro Tempore of the Maricopa County Superior Court.
Active in the community as well as the bar, Mr. Friedman co-founded Hacienda De Los Angeles, a home for the profoundly handicapped in the 1960s. He was on the Board of Directors for several years and also served as its chairman. Mr. Friedman also participated in the Washington University Alumni Board of Governors. Currently, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Safe Harbor Support, Inc., an organization dedicated to providing assistance to the families of accident victims.
Richard P. Traulsen has been with Begam, Lewis & Marks since 1996, and is currently our managing attorney. Since coming to the firm, Mr. Traulsen has focused his practice exclusively on representing the families of people killed or severely injured by the negligent or reckless conduct of others. He has handled and tried a variety of cases, ranging from medical malpractice to dangerous road design.
Mr. Traulsen earned his undergraduate degree from Arizona State University in 1984, and then managed a local commercial refrigeration equipment company for seven years before returning to school to study law. In 1994, he graduated Cum Laude from Arizona State University College of Law. Mr. Traulsen served as the Legislative Review Editor for the Arizona State Law Journal from 1993-94, and was awarded the Order of the Coif for his scholastic and professional achievements. Following graduation, he was selected as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Noel Fidel of the Arizona Court of Appeals.
Mr. Traulsen has developed special expertise in collisions involving commercial interstate trucks. He is active in the American Association for Justice, is a past national chair of the association’s Interstate Trucking Litigation Group, and a frequent lecturer at their educational programs on Interstate Trucking Litigation. Mr. Traulsen is also a member of the State Bar of Arizona, the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association, and Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. Mr. Traulsen is also a Judge Pro Tempore of the Maricopa County Superior Court.
Mr. Traulsen volunteers with the Arizona Hemophilia Association, where he serves as the current President of the Board of Directors. He also volunteers on the Board of Directors for several other nonprofit organizations, including Safe Harbor Support, Inc., an organization devoted to providing aid to Arizona families of traffic accident victims, and Camp Swift, which offers free tutoring and summer camp programs for economically disadvantaged youth.
Serena C. Montague specializes in representing victims of medical malpractice, defective products, and nursing home abuse. She has successfully handled both individual claims and class-action lawsuits against national and international corporations involving such products as prescription medications and implantable medical devices.
Ms. Montague graduated with Honors from Hollins College in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, and received her law degree from Tulane University Law School in 1984. She is admitted to practice law in both Arizona and Maryland. Ms. Montague has served on the boards of a number of charitable foundations and is involved in several church committees concerned with exploring new forms of worship and improving efforts to help homeless families regain financial independence.
Lissa Mascio is the newest associate at Begam, Lewis & Marks. Ms. Mascio received her undergraduate degree in English and Journalism from the University of New Hampshire in 1999. She attended Harvard Law School before receiving her Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra, summa cum laude, in 2006. Ms. Mascio was admitted to the Arizona State Bar in February 2007, and is an active member of both the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association and the American Association for Justice.
Ms. Mascio’s career before admission to the practice of law was broad and varied. She was the district manager of a small newspaper in central Vermont and an advocate for runaway and homeless youth at the Vermont Statehouse. During law school, Ms. Mascio served as a legislative assistant for the New Hampshire American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), and was an Army Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps intern with the Third Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia. She also spent time as an intern for the New Hampshire Public Defender’s Office in Stratham and as a law clerk for Judge John Korbey of the Family Division Court in Salem, New Hampshire.
Ms. Mascio’s free, imaginative spirit, dedication to the causes of her clients, and service to the principles of justice are well-matched with our firm’s long history of community service.
David Neal Rosen practiced with one of our predecessor firms - Langerman, Begam, and Lewis - in the 1960s. He rejoined the firm in an of counsel capacity in 1999. Mr. Rosen is actively engaged in representing plaintiffs in personal injury, aviation law, professional negligence, and wrongful death claims.
Originally from New York City, Mr. Rosen earned his B.A. from New York University in 1955. He decided to pursue a career in law, and earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from New York University College of Law in 1958. Mr. Rosen was admitted to practice law in the state of New York in 1959. He was then admitted before the courts of the State of Arizona in 1961, and before the United States District Court, District of Arizona, in 1962. Additionally, Mr. Rosen was among the first lawyers to be qualified as a Certified Specialist in Injury and Wrongful Death Litigation by the Arizona Board of Legal Specialization.

Mr. Rosen’s community involvement and service has been significant. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Phoenix Jewish Federation and was a member of the Board of Directors of Arizona Citizens Against Gun Violence. Mr. Rosen was also the first President of the Board of Directors of the Hillel Foundation at Arizona State University.
Robert Begam is a founding member of our Phoenix-based law firm. He is a graduate of Yale College and Yale University Law School. Mr. Begam is a past president of the American Association for Justice, formerly the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and a lifetime faculty member of that organization. He is also a co-founder of the association’s Political Action Committee, ATLA-PAC, which he chaired for seven years.
In his law practice, Robert Begam has concentrated on product liability and medical malpractice litigation. Over the past 40 years, he has lectured on those and other legal subjects in 49 of the 50 United States and in numerous foreign countries. Mr. Begam also served as trial counsel for the State of Arizona in the Colorado River litigation before the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Begam is also the author of the novel, Fireball: A Courtroom Drama, published by McGraw Hill.
Frank Lewis, of counsel to Begam, Lewis & Marks, is actively engaged in his primary practice area: securities litigation and arbitration. Mr. Lewis also actively participates in and is available to the firm and its clients in the firm’s area of focus, representing injured plaintiffs for personal injuries and wrongful death.
Frank Lewis earned his A.B. from Columbia University in 1951. As well as excelling academically, Mr. Lewis was a starting center on Columbia’s varsity basketball team. After completing his undergraduate degree, he continued his studies at Columbia, earning his Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University College of Law in 1953.
Mr. Lewis was first admitted to practice law in New York in 1954. After serving as a prosecuting attorney in New York for three years, he moved to Arizona and was admitted to the state bar in 1957. Mr. Lewis has been a member of our firm and its predecessors since 1958.
